LANCASTER, PA — The Lancaster Stormers are gearing up for a strong 2024 season by adding some major league experience to their pitching staff. This week, the team announced the signing of veteran right-handed pitcher James Hoyt, a move that manager Ross Peeples believes could be a game-changer.

At 37, Hoyt brings a wealth of experience from his time in the majors, having pitched for the Houston Astros, Cleveland Indians, Miami Marlins, and Los Angeles Angels. Over six years at baseball’s highest level, Hoyt made 107 relief appearances, boasting a solid 4-1 record and a 3.94 ERA. Despite last appearing in the majors with the Angels in 2021 and rounding out that year with Class AAA Salt Lake, Hoyt hasn’t hung up his cleats just yet. He recently showed he still has what it takes on the mound during the Venezuelan League this past winter, where he went 1-1 in 15 appearances for Lara.

The Stormers’ bullpen now counts 15 pitchers, though they’ve hit a snag with delays in the arrivals of Oscar De La Cruz, the 2022 Championship Series MVP, and Junior Mieses. Hoyt’s addition not only fills this gap but adds a layer of depth and experience that could be crucial over the long haul of the season.

Hoyt’s journey to Lancaster is a testament to the resilience and determination that defines so many baseball careers. Starting his professional journey in the minor leagues with teams like Yuma of the now-defunct North American Baseball League and making stops with Edinburg of that same league and Wichita of the American Association, Hoyt clawed his way up to sign with the Atlanta Braves in 2013. His story is a shining example of how the MLB Partner Leagues can serve as a launching pad for talent to reach the majors.

Manager Ross Peeples is optimistic about what Hoyt can bring to the table. “Hoyt is a veteran pitcher who has the itch to keep playing and wants to prove himself,” Peeples said. “We are going to give him a chance to do that. He has good numbers across the board, and will be a veteran presence in our clubhouse to help with our youth.”

As the 2024 season approaches, the Stormers’ latest acquisition highlights the team’s commitment to blending experienced hands with emerging talent. Hoyt’s presence in the locker room and on the mound will be invaluable as Lancaster looks to make a splash in the upcoming campaign. With a mix of proven skills and a point to prove, James Hoyt could be one of the stories of the season for the Stormers.
