U.S. 202 in Montgomery County Reopens After Urgent Pavement Repairs

Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT)

UPPER MERION TWP, PA — In a swift response to infrastructure concerns, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has successfully reopened all lanes on a critical stretch of U.S. 202 (Dekalb Pike) in Upper Merion Township, Montgomery County. The highway segment between Henderson Road and Saulin Boulevard was cleared for traffic following comprehensive pavement repair work.

The need for immediate action came to light early Wednesday, April 17, when a significant depression was identified in the northbound travel lanes, posing a potential hazard to motorists. PennDOT’s contractor promptly addressed the issue, excavating the affected area to remove unstable soil—a common precursor to sinkholes. Following the removal of compromised material, the site was backfilled to level with the pavement, fortified with a subbase and binder layer, and finally, repaved and restriped, ensuring the road’s safe reopening to the public.

Looking ahead, a more extensive sinkhole remediation effort is on the horizon for U.S. 202 (Dekalb Pike) in the King of Prussia area, as well as on Route 29 (Morehall Road) in East Whiteland Township, Chester County. This forthcoming project, scheduled to be advertised for construction bids this summer, aims to address underlying issues more thoroughly and prevent similar disruptions in the future.
