MONTGOMERY COUNTY, PA — Motorists navigating Bethlehem Pike in Springfield and Whitemarsh townships, Montgomery County, can expect lane closures and potential delays next week as part of ongoing traffic signal construction. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has embarked on a safety improvement project aimed at modernizing intersections along a strategic 1.9-mile stretch of the road.
From Monday, April 29, through Friday, May 3, between the hours of 9:00 AM and 3:00 PM, travelers will encounter lane closures in both directions at the intersection of Bethlehem Pike and Montgomery Avenue. Drivers are urged to factor in additional travel time due to the likelihood of congestion in the work area. Completion of these activities remains subject to favorable weather conditions.
This initiative represents a comprehensive effort to enhance roadway safety and efficiency. Key elements of the project include transforming a portion of Bethlehem Pike from a four-lane undivided roadway into a three-lane configuration featuring a central two-way left turn lane. Additionally, adjustments will be made to left-turn signal timing and arterial signals will be synchronized to improve traffic flow.
Pedestrians have not been overlooked in the planning process. Countdown timers will be installed at select crossings to inform walkers of the remaining time to safely cross, and retroreflective backplates are being added to traffic signals to boost visibility, especially under low-light conditions. The project also entails milling and resurfacing the pavement along the corridor to ensure a smoother ride for all users.
The safety improvement endeavors span several key intersections, including those at Flourtown Shopping Center Driveway, Mill Road, College Avenue, Bysher Avenue, Wissahickon Avenue, Haws Lane, Montgomery Avenue, Sunnybrook Road, and Hillcrest Avenue.
Highway Materials, Inc., based in Flourtown, Pennsylvania, serves as the general contractor for this federally funded project. Aimed at significantly reducing accidents and improving the overall driving experience, the construction work is slated for completion in the fall.
