Sinkhole Repairs on U.S. 202 Prompt Lane Closure in Upper Merion Township

traffic alert expect delays

UPPER MERION TWP, PA — In Upper Merion Township, Montgomery County, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has initiated urgent repairs on a sinkhole that emerged on northbound U.S. 202 (Dekalb Pike), leading to a sustained left lane closure between Henderson Road and Saulin Boulevard. The disruption began early this morning when a significant depression was detected in the pavement, posing a hazard to northbound travelers.

Efforts to address this issue will expand tomorrow, April 18, with an additional left lane closure on southbound U.S. 202 (Dekalb Pike). This measure is necessary to allow PennDOT’s contractor to conduct a thorough excavation of the affected area. The process involves identifying the void beneath the surface, backfilling it to level with the pavement using a flowable fill, and then laying down a subbase and binder. Finally, the highway will be repaved and restriped in preparation for its safe reopening to traffic.

Motorists are being cautioned to expect significant delays when passing through the area and to plan their travel times accordingly. Despite the inconvenience, local access for residents and businesses will remain unaffected.

This particular stretch of U.S. 202 (Dekalb Pike) is no stranger to such disruptions, having been closed twice in the past year — once in July and again in December — for similar sinkhole repairs. In response to the recurring issue, PennDOT has announced plans for a comprehensive sinkhole remediation project not only for U.S. 202 but also for Route 29 (Morehall Road) in East Whiteland Township, Chester County. This project is slated to be advertised for construction later this summer, signaling a proactive approach to addressing and preventing future occurrences.
