Nighttime Construction Set to Enhance Safety and Traffic Flow on I-476

Traffic Alert

RIDLEY TWP, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has unveiled plans for a significant upgrade aimed at improving travel and safety along Interstate 476 and MacDade Boulevard in Ridley Township, Delaware County. A key part of this $18.1 million project involves the replacement of sign structures at the MacDade Boulevard Interchange, scheduled to take place under the cover of darkness next week to minimize disruption.

Motorists traveling in the area on Monday, April 22, should anticipate 15-minute stoppages from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning. These brief halts in traffic flow are necessary for the removal of old signage and the installation of new structures. Originally planned for Wednesday, April 17, this operation was postponed due to inclement weather predictions.

Travelers are advised to budget extra time for their journeys through this section of I-476 as the construction work is expected to lead to delays. As always, the timing of these activities is contingent upon favorable weather conditions.

This comprehensive project extends beyond mere sign replacement. A key component involves the creation of a left turn lane on eastbound MacDade Boulevard at Bullens Lane Intersection. This modification aims to decrease the likelihood of rear-end collisions while enhancing visibility for vehicles making left turns. Additionally, traffic signals will be upgraded and new curb ramps installed to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), ensuring safer and more accessible pedestrian crossings.

The initiative also includes the installation of two dynamic message boards and CCTV cameras along MacDade Boulevard, spanning from Bullens Lane to Fairview Road. These technological enhancements are designed to improve traffic management and connectivity.

Significant improvements are slated for the northbound I-476 ramp to MacDade Boulevard as well. The plan calls for widening and realigning the westbound ramp to form a “T” intersection with MacDade Boulevard, complete with traffic signals to facilitate safer turning movements.

To address traffic congestion, auxiliary lanes will be constructed on northbound I-476 near the MacDade Boulevard and U.S. 1 Interchanges, all within the existing roadway boundaries. Guiderail updates along northbound I-476 are also on the agenda.

Moreover, the project will see the removal of the existing pedestrian bridge over Crum Creek, replaced by a newly aligned pedestrian bridge adjacent to MacDade Boulevard, enhancing pedestrian access and safety.

Allan Myers, LP, based in Worcester, Montgomery County, has been entrusted as the general contractor for this project, which benefits from both federal and state funding. Through these upgrades, PennDOT aims to significantly enhance the safety and efficiency of one of the area’s crucial transportation corridors.
