PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced a series of lane closures on the southbound U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Expressway) as part of a substantial $100.6 million project aimed at rehabilitating the Wayne Junction Viaduct, spanning the SEPTA tracks and the Nicetown neighborhood of Philadelphia.

Starting next week, motorists will encounter nighttime closures and restrictions continuously over the next three weekends. These measures are necessary to facilitate pavement repair work designed to extend the lifespan of the southbound lanes between the Wayne Avenue Viaduct and Interstate 76.

Specifically, the southbound U.S. 1 ramp to westbound I-76 will be closed on Monday, April 22, and Tuesday, April 23, from 11:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning. During this time, drivers will be directed to detour east on I-76 to Montgomery Drive (Exit 341), where they can access the ramp to I-76 west.

Additionally, from Monday, April 22, through Friday, April 26, a periodic single lane closure will be enforced on southbound U.S. 1 between Fox Street and Interstate 76 from 6:00 PM to 5:30 AM the following day. The closures will intensify starting Friday, April 26, through Monday, May 13, with a continuous single lane closure and occasional double lane closures from 6:00 PM on Fridays to 5:30 AM on Mondays.

Motorists planning to travel through the affected area during these times are advised to anticipate delays and allocate extra time for their journeys. PennDOT has stressed that the timing of these activities is contingent upon favorable weather conditions, indicating that schedules may be subject to change.
