Major Intersection Upgrade in Montgomery Township Promises Improved Safety and Traffic Flow

Traffic Alert

MONTGOMERY TWP, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced ongoing utility work as part of a comprehensive $14.2 million improvement project at one of Montgomery County’s busiest crossroads, the Five-Points Intersection. This pivotal junction, where Route 309 (Bethlehem Pike), Route 463 (Horsham Road/Cowpath Road), and Business U.S. 202 (Doylestown Road) converge, is set for significant enhancements designed to bolster travel safety and efficiency.

Starting Monday, April 22, through Friday, April 26, motorists navigating this area will face lane closures. The work schedule includes a daytime closure on Monday from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, followed by nighttime closures from Tuesday to Friday, between 7:00 PM and 5:00 AM. The affected stretches include Route 309 between North Wales Road and McLaughlin Road, Route 463 between Lansdale Avenue and North Wales Road, and Business U.S. 202 between Route 309 and Betty’s Avenue. Drivers are encouraged to allow extra travel time due to expected delays and backups, with all operations contingent on favorable weather conditions.

The intersection’s overhaul aims to address chronic congestion and safety concerns by adding additional through lanes on both directions of Route 463 and on southbound Route 309. The planned expansion from 15 to 18 travel lanes at the approaches promises a smoother traffic flow and a reduction in crash incidents.

Further improvements under this project include the upgrading and retiming of signals, the installation of sidewalks, ADA-compliant curb ramps, guiderail, enhanced stormwater drainage systems, and new signage and pavement markings. Adjustments to driveway access and measures to curb erosion and sediment are also on the agenda, ensuring a comprehensive upgrade of the infrastructure.

Particularly noteworthy is the anticipated improvement in traffic flow for westbound Route 463 motorists making a right turn onto northbound Business U.S. 202, a critical adjustment that underscores PennDOT’s commitment to easing travel in this high-traffic area.

Road-Con, Inc., a construction firm based in West Chester, Chester County, has been tapped as the general contractor for this ambitious project, which is financed entirely by federal funds.
