Major Construction on U.S. 422 to Disrupt Traffic, Enhance Safety in Montgomery County

Traffic Alert

LOWER POTTSGROVE TWP, PA — Next week, motorists navigating U.S. 422 in Lower Pottsgrove Township, Montgomery County, will face a series of lane and shoulder closures as part of an extensive $83.6 million initiative by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) to overhaul a critical 1.7-mile segment of the expressway. This ambitious project, aimed at reconstructing and improving the roadway as well as replacing several bridges between the Sanatoga Interchange and Porter Road, is designed to significantly enhance travel safety and efficiency.

From Monday, April 15, through Thursday, April 18, drivers should anticipate varied disruptions. Evening and early morning hours will see a lane and shoulder closure on westbound U.S. 422 between Route 724 and Route 100 to facilitate the installation of Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) infrastructure. ITS technologies improve traffic flow and safety by providing real-time information to motorists and transportation officials.

Additionally, during the same dates but in daytime hours, further lane and shoulder closures will occur on westbound U.S. 422 for shoulder reconstruction work, stretching from Evergreen Road to Armand Hammer Boulevard. This section will also experience intermittent 15-minute traffic stoppages and pacing operations between 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM to allow for controlled rock blasting necessary for drainage construction.

Eastbound U.S. 422 is not spared from the construction activities, with periodic lane and shoulder closures for shoulder reconstruction work scheduled between Keim Street and Evergreen Road from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

The controlled blasting and subsequent stoppages are critical for ensuring the safety of both the workers on-site and the motorists passing through the area. These efforts are part of the broader Section M1B project, which includes the reconstruction of U.S. 422 on both existing and revised alignments. The project aims to improve horizontal curve radii, shoulder widths, and vertical clearance, addressing long-standing safety concerns and improving the overall travel experience.

Moreover, the initiative encompasses the replacement of a culvert at Sprogels Run and the existing single-span bridge over Porter Road with a new two-span bridge. Additionally, the bridge over Sanatoga Road and Sanatoga Creek is set for reconstruction and widening, further contributing to the project’s goal of enhancing roadway safety.

Motorists planning to travel through this section of U.S. 422 next week are urged to allocate extra time to their journeys to account for expected delays and backups. PennDOT has emphasized that all scheduled construction activities are contingent upon favorable weather conditions.
