PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced that the concluding stages of construction on a major bridge replacement project will cause temporary disruptions for motorists traveling through Philadelphia’s Hunting Park section next week. This work is part of the final push to complete the overhaul of the critical infrastructure connecting southbound U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Boulevard) to southbound U.S. 13 (Hunting Park Avenue).

From Monday, April 15, through Friday, April 19, drivers should anticipate periodic single lane closures from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM and again from 8:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning. These closures will affect both northbound and southbound lanes on U.S. 1 between Wyoming Avenue and 16th Street, as well as the southbound U.S. 13/Hunting Park Avenue ramp over U.S. 1.

The lane closures are necessary to facilitate the remaining construction activities tied to a $7.79 million bridge improvement initiative, which has already seen the successful replacement of the southbound U.S. 13/Hunting Park Avenue ramp over U.S. 1. Reopened to traffic on February 15, 2024, the new bridge features a single-span, prestressed, precast concrete design offering increased vertical clearance—a significant upgrade from the previous structure.

In addition to the bridge replacement, the comprehensive project has encompassed a range of enhancements designed to improve safety and accessibility. These improvements include the extension of retaining walls on the bridge approaches, full-depth paving, and the installation of new sidewalks, ADA-compliant curb ramps, a new traffic signal, highway lighting, guiderails, and pavement markings.

South State, Inc., based in Bridgeton, N.J., serves as the general contractor for this federally funded project.

Motorists planning to travel through the affected sections of Roosevelt Boulevard next week are advised to allow additional time for their journeys to accommodate potential delays. PennDOT emphasizes that all scheduled construction activities are contingent upon favorable weather conditions and may be subject to change.
