WILMINGTON, DE — Demonstrating unparalleled mastery in environmental sciences, the Charter School of Wilmington Team A emerged victorious at the 2024 Delaware Envirothon, clinching their 22nd title in the competition’s 28-year history. The event, organized by the Delaware Association of Conservation Districts, took place today at Abbotts Mill Nature Center in Milford, solidifying Wilmington’s enviable position in the state’s premier high school environmental competition.

Behind Charter School of Wilmington, Odessa High School FFA secured the second place, followed by Wilmington Charter School Team B in third, showcasing the breadth of young environmental talent across Delaware. The competition drew 16 teams from nine high schools and one 4-H club statewide, all of whom had dedicated the school year to preparing for the rigorous event.

Participants were tested on a variety of environmental topics, including aquatic ecology, soils and land use, wildlife, forestry, and this year’s focal issue, “Renewable Energy for a Sustainable Future.” Teams also faced the challenge of delivering a seven to 10-minute oral presentation, further testing their knowledge and communicative skills.

After an intense three-hour competition, Charter School of Wilmington Team A stood out with their comprehensive understanding and innovative approaches to environmental issues. Their victory earns them the opportunity to represent Delaware at the 2024 National Conservation Foundation (NCF) International Envirothon, set to be held in Geneva, New York. This presents a chance for the team to showcase their skills on an international stage, competing against some of the brightest young minds in environmental science.

The win not only brings prestige but also scholarships for each member of the Charter School of Wilmington Team A, alongside other prizes and an award plaque for their school. The event overall awarded over $1,300 in special team awards and cash prizes to the second through seventh place teams, highlighting the commitment of the Delaware Envirothon to fostering environmental stewardship among the youth.
