Pennsylvania Announces Major Rehabilitation Project for Kinzua Bridge State Park Skywalk

Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR)

HARRISBURG, PA — The Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) Secretary Cindy Adams Dunn revealed plans for a significant rehabilitation of the Kinzua Bridge State Park Skywalk, a project aimed at preserving the iconic structure for future generations. This announcement comes as part of Governor Shapiro’s initiative, which allocated $112 million towards enhancing the state’s parks and forests infrastructure, marking the largest investment of its kind in recent decades.

The Kinzua Bridge, located in McKean County within the Pennsylvania Wilds, offers breathtaking views of the Kinzua Valley from its skywalk. The viaduct, partially destroyed by a tornado, was ingeniously converted into a skywalk, allowing visitors to experience the valley from a unique perspective. However, to maintain its structural integrity and safety, the DCNR has decided to undertake necessary maintenance after a recent inspection indicated the need for such measures.

The project, set to commence at the end of 2024, will not disrupt the peak visitor season, ensuring that the Skywalk remains accessible during the popular fall foliage period. “DCNR understands the skywalk experience is most spectacular during fall foliage season and visitors support local economies,” Dunn stated, highlighting the project’s scheduling considerations.

Rehabilitation efforts will focus on replacing and adding new steel to certain areas of the skywalk’s supports, which have suffered from exposure to the elements over time. Additional improvements include the removal and replacement of decking and railroad ties, installation of new plexiglass for the viewing area, handrail replacements, and a comprehensive cleaning and painting of all steel portions of the structure.

To facilitate these extensive renovations, the skywalk and Kinzua Creek Trail will be temporarily closed to pedestrian traffic. However, the DCNR plans to minimize the impact on visitors by reopening the skywalk for approximately two months each fall during the construction period, allowing for uninterrupted enjoyment of the seasonal scenery.

Visitors planning to visit the park are encouraged to check the DCNR website or contact the park office for the latest information on closures and project updates. Despite the temporary inconveniences, the Kinzua Bridge State Park Visitor Center, along with other park facilities such as picnic tables, pavilion, playground, and observation deck, will remain open, offering alternative ways to enjoy the park’s natural beauty.

This rehabilitation project underscores Pennsylvania’s commitment to preserving its natural and historical landmarks, ensuring they continue to inspire and attract visitors for many years to come. The Kinzua Bridge Skywalk, once a marvel of engineering and now a testament to resilience and innovation, is set to receive the care it needs to remain a cherished destination in the Pennsylvania Wilds.
