CHESTER SPRINGS, PA — Historic Yellow Springs will once again be participating in the 2018 Town Tours and Village Walks program on Thursday, July 19, for the 23rd consecutive year. Plan to join Chester County residents and beyond who will tour our village on this evening beginning at 5:30 p.m. with the last tour leaving at 7 p.m. All tours are free to the public.

The theme for 2018 is Innovation and Industry in Chester County and will be celebrated at ten sites throughout the county. Chester County has a long and distinguished industrial heritage beginning in 1682. Innovations in government, education and industry will be explored. Iron and steel and our rich furnace history are celebrated as well as the “Mushroom Capital of the World” industry in southern Chester County. County mills for grains and textiles are on the tour, plus you will learn about the antiques and modern machines used in the agricultural industry. A visit to a canal village will highlight the innovations that made the Schuylkill Canal possible promoting major progress in industrial production.
At Yellow Springs, we will be exploring the industries in the village that were handled by women. Be it spa management, medical needs, educational administration or radio, TV and film production, women at Yellow Springs stepped up and steered society to institute changes in recognizing the capabilities of women in innovative ways. These women of the 18th, 19th and even the 20th century stepped up to defy stereotypes of proper female behavior of the day and exhibited their powerful and multifaceted competence. We are calling our tour Industry Rebels: Women at Yellow Springs.
Abigail Hartman Rice, mother of 21 children, left her home each day to nurse the sick and dying at the Yellow Springs Revolutionary Hospital. Margaret Holman, a widow and mother of six, succeeded in a male world of business managing the spa here. Eleanor Moore, a Civil War widow, was principal of the Pennsylvania Soldiers’ Orphan School at Chester Springs. In the 1950s, Jean Bruce Yeaworth, wife of film producer Irvin Yeaworth and mother of 5, was the first woman to work in the Control Room at WFIL in its TV pioneering days and continued her music career as Music Director and scriptwriter for Good News Productions. You will also learn about our founder Connie Fraley and many other women who have had significant roles in guiding HYS over the years.
